According to Reginald Dwayne Betts, founder and creative force behind Freedom Reads, “Freedom begins with a book.” His life was transformed when, in solitary confinement at age 16, he called out, “Somebody, send me a book.” Moments later, a book slid under his cell door. Today, Freedom Reads’ carefully curated prison libraries create space in prison for inquiry, imagination, storytelling, sharing and community. Its literary programs also support the efforts of people in prison to imagine new possibilities for their lives and dream of a tomorrow beyond the confines of a prison cell.
