Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA)
Grants Awarded
Unrestricted Funding
Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) started at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in 1996 as a theater group to help incarcerated men write and perform a play about their lives. Today, RTA professional teaching artists lead theater, dance, music, writing and visual arts workshops for more than 200 men and women at six maximum and medium security NYS prisons. This grant provides general operating support to RTA and its mission to help people in prison develop critical life skills through the arts, modeling an approach to the justice system based on human dignity rather than punishment.
